In March, we teamed up with our friends at Fettes for a fantastic Log Carry fundraising event. We were honoured to see almost 500 of the Fettes students take part, carrying a metal log up and down the drive at Fettes College for 24 hours – all in support of SuperTroop. The log – weighing 100 kg – was picked up at 3pm and wasn’t set down again the following day at the same time. No mean feat when you realise that this log weighs the same as a giant panda.
Fettes students worked tirelessly through the night in 15-minute shifts, keeping each other going with sing-songs and tasty snacks, with staff and members of the SuperTroop team on-hand to cheer them on. Some teachers and volunteers even took shifts at the log carry to provide a helping hand. A mini campsite was set up on the College grounds to allow some of the Sixth Form night crew to get some rest during the ‘Dark Hours’ when the challenge got even tougher.
Almost £10,000 has been raised so far through sponsorship, with donations still coming in. This is an incredible amount of money for SuperTroop and smashes last year’s fundraising record. The proceeds will go directly to support the SuperTroop holiday at Fettes in July, allowing us to provide travel, admission to places like Edinburgh Zoo, fun activities and art supplies.
The SuperTroop team are so grateful to the whole Fettes community – student, staff and families – for supporting our small charity and for their valiant efforts in this monumental challenge.
Mr Rowlands, Director of Service at Fettes College, co-ordinated the challenge and said:“I couldn't be more proud of the grit and determination displayed by our students who worked tirelessly for 24 hours. They all arrived on time to ‘carry their weight’, over 80 students grafted through the night and a huge amount of staff and parent support was present throughout the 24 hours. SuperTroop is an incredibly deserving charity, the money we have raised will greatly enhance their ability to offer amazing opportunities to families and young people. Thank you for all the donations. We look forward to planning the 2024 event.”
Shane Canning, SuperTroop volunteer and Log Carry participant, said: “That was one heavy log! This was a tough event and we could really see that it was challenging the students – especially during the night. It was such an inspiration to see them rally for SuperTroop – they have made such a difference to the holiday that we will be able to provide this year.”
Some students shared their thoughts on taking part in the Challenge:
“Although one of the hardest things many have done within the school year, partaking in the SuperTroop log carrying challenge and seeing the funds raised by our physical contributions to the cause has been incredibly rewarding for all.” Georgie D
“It was hard no doubt, but hearing the amount of money we raised definitely made it worthwhile because of how important SuperTroop is.” Vinjero M
"In the middle of the night there was a sense of teamwork amongst the students. SuperTroop was a truly unifying cause." Eliza M
